When I think of Black my mind always goes to Coco Chanel and the little black dress. The little black dress is timeless. An iconic piece of clothing that will never go out of style.

Your furniture. Think of your furniture as having great bones maybe a little age to it but over all in wonderful shape. Furniture just needs a little love. You can be the Coco Chanel to your furniture. You can make your furniture timeless with the right paint. 🙂

Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence or complete absorption of visiblelight. It is an achromatic color, a color without hue, like white and gray.[1]” – Wikepedia

“Black was one of the first colors used by artists in neolithic cave paintings. In the 14th century, it was worn by royalty, clergy, judges and government officials in much of Europe. It became the color worn by English romantic poets, businessmen and statesmen in the 19th century, and a high fashion color in the 20th century.[2]” –Wikipedia

Black is a classic. It is a safe color (or actually absence of color) to paint your furniture.

I have used many black furniture paints over the years. One that is becoming my favorite is Dixie Belle Caviar. It is a rich black with no gray tones. I think you’ll like it too!

Steps to Painting Furniture Black

the best black paint for furniture
Before

Begin with a clean surface. (I had a bit of decluttering and cleaning to do on this piece!! :)) Wiping away any excess dust or dirt from your furniture. Once surface is clean you are ready to dip your paint brush into the Caviar paint. Begin applying the paint in even smooth strokes. Be careful not to apply too thick. Apply one coat of Caviar paint and let dry.

Applying first coat of paint.

After the first coat of Caviar paint has dried you will need to apply a second coat of paint. Repeat the same process as above. Applying paint smoothly and not too thick. You want to make sure that you can not see the underneath finish.

Once paint has dried you are ready to add your sealer. I used clear finishing wax. You can use a wax brush OR a shop towel to add the wax to your furniture. Make sure to rub the furniture wax just enough that it looks somewhat shiny and smooth. Do not over rub.

Adding clear finishing wax and distressing

After you have applied the clear finishing wax you can begin distressing the edges of your furniture! (This is optional! You make like your furniture smooth and undistressed!) Take the coarse steel wool and gently rub the raised edges of your painted furniture. Rub just enough to reveal the underneath original finish. Keep doing this until all raised edges have been exposed. 🙂

After wax and distressing!

Wipe off any little paint particles that distressing may have left behind. At this point you should have a little black dress of the furniture world! A timeless creation!

PRO TIP: Use Tung or Hemp oil to brighten up wood hardware. 🙂
