Painting Furniture is important because it is an affordable way to add a designers touch to your home! And it’s so fun!
I started painting furniture in 2014. My husband and I purchased a home and the previous homeowners were gracious enough to leave us some furniture! The furniture was from the 1970’s. VERY durable. All wood. But….the dated moroccan style and the dark wood of the furniture I was not feeling. I began taking painted finish classes in Memphis, TN from Mrs. Stephanie Jones, painted finish expert and interior Designer. After I had a few classes under my belt I began redoing our homes furniture and our friends furniture…and from there I started Phoenix-Refinishings, LLC. What was once old is now brought back to life more beautiful than what is was before! 🙂
What Is Painting Furniture?
Some people think painting furniture is like painting a wall. That it is a labor some task with no skill involved and really you are just slapping some paint on something to change it’s color. Painting furniture allows you to bring your personal touch to a piece that will be in your home or a clients home. There are many unique finishes that can be added to a piece of furniture. Everything from a faux marble finish, to a lightly distressed finish to a dark wax or glazed piece. Not to mention crackle effects, adding texture and the list goes on.
How To Get Started Painting Furniture
To get started painting furniture you will need a chalk based paint, 2″ chip brush, a sealer for your paint, and shop towels. You can never have too many shop towels. 🙂
Tips For Success In painting Furniture
Always paint a clean surface. Make sure surface is clean of all dust, stickers and anything else. 🙂 Have the proper brush. I recommend a 2″ chip brush for most projects. If you are wanting a smooth modern finish then you will want to use a fine bristle brush. If your can of paint has been sitting for a while give it a good shake, making sure it is an even color before you start applying the paint. Let stain blockers be your friend. If you piece has stains, spray with a stain blocker to block stains from seeping thru your painted finish.
