Old wooden cutting boards are probably one of my favorite things to pick up at flea markets, thrift stores, or a yard sale! They have so much character. They are typically worn and have been cut so many times the owner is done with them. And they are SUPER cheap. 😉
The cutting board below I picked up at our local Goodwill. I thought it would be fun to make our kids a small Lego table that was portable and friendly for car rides: something they could take with them and build their Legos on.

Supplies to Make a portable Lego Table Cutting Board
- Small old Cutting board
- Wood stain (I Had GF Java Gel stain on hand.)
- Foam Brush
- 1 Lego Sheet
- Liquid Nails
To begin, make sure cutting board is clean of any debris. Once cutting board is ready, spread a thin layer of the gel stain on the edges of the cutting. Wipe away any excess with a shop towel.
Add the gel stain to all edges of the cutting board, leaving the center clear. This will create better adhesion of the Lego Sheet.
Continue to wipe off excess stain until you have a smooth finish. Stain will seep into the wood. (NOTE: The nice thing about gel stain is that if your cutting board has an existing finish you can use gel stain because it will sit on top of the existing finish. My cutting board was already in a used condition with no existing finish so I chose to wipe off the excess stain.)
After gel stain has been applied, let dry. While stain is drying, turn over the Lego sheet and apply a liberal amount of liquid nails. Once you have a good amount of the liquid nails on the Lego sheet turn the Lego sheet back over and press it on to the cutting board surface! 🙂 This is the exciting part! Press it firmly on. You can start to see your mini Lego table coming to life!
NOTE: If you find a cutting board a bit larger you could even attach some cute handles to the sides!
I hope this can help you keep your car (somewhat;) clean of Legos!
